Board Approves Hearing For Businesses That Failed Alcohol Sting

Nine businesses that allegedly failed a recent compliance check will appear in front of the board.

NORWOOD, MA — A special selectmen meeting will be held to address nine establishments that failed a recent Norwood Police Department alcohol compliance check.

The selectmen voted last Tuesday to hold a special meeting for the hearings on a date to be determined. Selectman Allan Howard recommended the special meeting with a 6 p.m. start time.

During the recent check, a 19-year-old operative was sent into 18 establishments to see if they would be served alcohol. Half of them served a drink to the operative without asking for identification.

"I was stricken by that. I did not think compliance would be that low, I was surprised by it," Chief William Brooks told the selectmen.

According to records given to the board, none of the establishments caught in the sting have similar violations over the past decade.

After approving the hearing, board Chairman William Plasko said he would like to look into a possible ordinance that would require businesses that serve alcohol to have employees that are TIPS certified.

The name of the establishments that failed the check have not been released.
