Library Happenings: Dan Shaughnessy Heads to Norwood, Annual Book Sales Begin

Norwood

Boston Globe sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy will be visiting the Norwood Theater Monday at 7 p.m. to discuss writing about the Boston sports scene. Attendees will be able to purchase autographed copies of his book "Franconia: The Red Sox Years". 

Norwood resident Bryan Burns, a professor of classical archaeology at Wellesley College, will visit the Norwood Public Library on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. to discuss the archaeological excavations he is leading in Eleon, a rural site 30 miles north of Athens.

Dedham 

UPDATE (Thursday, May 9 - 1 p.m.) - The Dedham Library has canceled one of the programs originally scheduled for Children's Book Week (May 13-19).

The library will be holding a Book and Craft program at the Dedham Main Library on Monday, May 13 at 3:45 p.m. for children age 4 and older.

Walpole

If you're in need of a good laugh, head over to the Walpole Public Library on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for an evening of what is known as Laughter Yoga. To get some insight into what exactly Laughter Yoga is, check out this feature on teachers Linda and Bill Hamaker as they engage in the program in Westwood. 

Sharon

The Sharon Public Library is currently collecting donations of gently-used books, CDs and DVDs for its upcoming Book Sale on May 16. 

Canton

The Canton Public Library is hosting a "Joy Spring Jazz" event this Saturday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. That night, Lisa Yves will perform with Rich Rancatore, Tal Shalom Kobi, Miki Matsuki and Eric Bindman. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Cost is $12 per person ($6 for students). 

On Friday, May 17, the library will host a Book & Brew author talk and beer tasting from 7:30-9:30 p.m. If you're interested in books and beer, you're in for a treat. Attend the event to hear about Beer Lover's New England book author Norman Miller's travels throughout New England in search of different brews. Then enjoy a sampling of local brews, including those featured at the Blue Hills Brewery. 

Stoughton 

Looking for a unique gift for Mom this Mother's Day? Check out a Mother's day Duct Tape Jewelry making event on Tuesday, May 7 at 3:15 p.m. at the Stoughton Public Library. Learn how to use colorful duct tape to make a bracelet and necklace for your mom. 

Also at the library on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 p.m., Michael Warwick, an environmental project manager, will talk about the history of amphibian studies in Wisconsin, the impact that people are having on global amphibian populations and ultimately the effects this is having on the human environment.

Wrentham-Norfolk-Plainville

Wrentham's Fiske Library is now accepting donations in good condition for its upcoming booksale on Saturday, May 18. Encyclopedias, audio or video cassettes will not be accepted. The sale will offer “like-new” books, DVDs and audiobooks at bargain prices. 

The Friends of the Norfolk Public Library will gather for a monthly meeting on Monday May 6 at 7 p.m. 

Also this week, check out a TNQ Young Writer's Workshop, a Teen Friends of the Library meeting (for students in Grades 7-12) and a History Book Discussion Group. 

Visit the Plainville Public Library to vote for a name for the new Dig Into Summer Reading mascot. Also check out the Friends of the Plainville Public Library meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6 at 7 p.m.

Mansfield

It's a week filled with story time programs for children in Mansfield. Find out when the next program is being held on the Mansfield Public Library's website.

Easton

The Friends of the Ames Free Library in Easton will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday. And on Tuesday, the Farmers Daughter Neighborhood Cafe "Foodie Group Event" will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Norton 

The Norton Public Library's spring bok sale is set to begin Tuesday, May 7 and run through Saturday, May 11. Here is the schedule: 

  • Tuesday: Friends Only* 4-7 p.m. (*You can join at the door!)
  • Wednesday: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • Thursday: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
  • Friday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. ($3.00/bag)

Attleboro

The Attleboro Garden Club will meet at the library on Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. The monthly meeting will feature a presentation of Michael Ford from Apollo Herbs.

From 12-4 p.m. on Monday, May 6, the Seekonk Public Library will host an annual employee Informational fair for employees of the town on benefits available.

Swansea

Spring Story Hour begins Monday, May 6 at the Swansea Public Library and will run daily throughout the week. Join others for an hour of books and crafts and fun.
