Norwood Celebrates Earth Day 2012

On Earth Day, we focus on Earth, her needs and gifts. Our ecosystem is more delicate than we realized, and what we humans do (or don’t do) alters it, sometimes leaning toward the beneficial and sometimes not.

We take this day (Sunday, April 22), now celebrated internationally though started in the United States, to celebrate the wonder of all life on Earth. We also, and critically, renew our commitment to reduce our harmful activities and step up our efforts to protect Earth.

In Norwood, we are honoring Earth by becoming “guerrilla gardeners” with seed bombs to be placed where least expected (in fallow ground only). Laced with native wildflower seeds, these bombs result in small patches of plant life that are useful to butterflies and bees, improve soil, and beautify.

We invite everyone to drop by between 2:00-5:00 p.m. and share this celebration and commitment with your neighbors in Norwood. Children are welcome, and there will be activities for them, centered on Earth. The event is free, but bring a few dollars for the seed bombs you take away with you for your spring guerrilla gardening.

Come to United Church at the corner of Washington and Nahatan Streets (across the street from the Common). The event is indoors, as rain is expected. Mother Nature usually makes herself felt on Earth Day in New England.
