Proper Attic Weatherization

The owner of Neponset Valley Construction explains how to properly weatherize your attic.

Many people are mistaken, thinking of their ceilings as solid. The fact is that the ceiling often leaks air into unfinished attics space; problematic gaps are often found around lighting fixtures and piping. This can be a huge problem when it comes to your utility bill as experts estimate as much as 30 percent of cooling and heating costs are lost due to air leaks.

Assess the location of light fixtures and ceiling fans and head to the attic. Check these same location, you will probably have to peel up insulation to do so and this is where air leaks are most commonly found. Large gaps around plumbing pipes can be sealed with low-expansion polyurethane foam; it can seal openings up to three inches wide. Caulk is the best solution for openings of a quarter inch or less which can often be found around electrical boxes.

When you're working in the attic try to work on a cool day. Also wear protection, this includes gloves, a mask, and even a respirator if you're working with insulation. To avoid an accident it's smart to bring all the materials you need up at once in order to avoid extra trips up and down.
