In partnership with the Norwood Historical Society and the First Congregational Church of Norwood, the Morrill Memorial Library is honored to host Aquinnah Wampanoag educator Brad Lopes for a virtual presentation of "King Philip's War: 350 Years of Impact and Memory" on Wednesday, November 18 starting at 7:00pm on Zoom.
The events that are commonly known by scholars and settlers as King Philip's War (1675 - 1678) have been largely told through settler-colonial perspectives. Viewing events "from the land" instead of "from the boat," participants will hear a retelling of the events leading up to, during, and after this historical conflict from a Wôpanâak/Wampanoag perspective that takes into account written historical sources, oral history, and continued cultural epistemologies. Often considered the bloodiest conflict in "American" history and a global moment of reverberation, participants will learn how to understand this moment with greater local and global context. The presentation will be led by Aquinnah Wampanoag educator Brad Lopes.
About the presenter: Brad Lopes is an Aquinnah Wampanoag citizen who serves as the Education Director for his Tribe and as the Education and Public Programs Manager for the Aquinnah Cultural Center. In these roles, he faces inward, by supporting educational programs and services for the Tribe, and outward, by bridging gaps in understanding about Wampanoag culture and history in public education spaces. Brad also serves on the board of the Indigenous Resources Collaborative and Whale and Dolphin Conservation, Inc. Outside these roles, his work centers on understanding the role of settler colonialism and its subsequent mechanisms in establishing the social, economic, and legal framework for settler statecraft and empire building in the Dawnland (New England) and Turtle Island (North America).
Registration is required for this virtual program; register online, or by visiting or calling the Reference Desk at 781-769-0200 x2. Many thanks to the First Congregational Church of Norwood for providing Zoom access, and to the Friends of the Library for sponsoring this program.
