After a nasty April Fool’s Joke of a snowstorm, the sun shone brightly on Norwood Recreation Department’s annual “Earth Day Clean-up “ Saturday morning.
Recreation Superintendent Jerry Miller describes the event as mutually beneficial. “It is a great opportunity for middle school students at the Coakley to earn their PINS points, and we get a jump-start on the spring cleaning.”
The event takes place each year at the Hawes Recreation Area in South Norwood. Volunteers spent the morning picking up trash and recycling as well as raking and removing yard debris. The Balch School sponsored their own event just down the street. The event at Hawes was well attended by Norwood Middle School groups and members of the Norwood High School Environmental Youth Coalition.

Although a bit chilly, student groups and residents seemed cheerful and ready to participate in any activity that meant spring has finally arrived. Their hard work was rewarded with an Earth Day T-shir, and a BBQ lunch.
