Federal Officers Arrest Man After Crash, Foot Chase In Norwood

NORWOOD, MA — Federal officers took a man into custody Thursday morning following a crash and brief foot pursuit on Tremont Street, according to Norwood police.

The Department of Homeland Security told Norwood officers that Cleiton Toledo de Souza was wanted in Brazil in connection with a murder, police said. Norwood police did not provide details about the case in Brazil or documentation confirming DHS’s claim.

Norwood police were notified shortly before 7 a.m. of a motor vehicle crash near 6 Tremont St. Responding officers found DHS personnel who said they had been in the area attempting to locate and arrest de Souza.

DHS officers told police they saw de Souza enter a vehicle and attempted to take him into custody. De Souza fled in the vehicle, struck two parked vehicles then ran from the scene on foot, according to police.

Federal officers took de Souza into custody after a brief foot pursuit and later left the scene with him, police said.

Norwood officers investigated and documented the crashes. Police did not report any injuries.
