Lady Mustangs Win Mulloy Sportsmanship Award

The girls hockey team was presented the award last night at the TD Garden in Boston.

Despite losing a heartbreaker last week to Fontbonne in the semi-finals of the MIAA girls hockey division 2 tournament, the Norwood girls came away victorious for their achievement off the ice in receiving the James L. Mulloy Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for the 2010-2011 season.

The girls were recognized and received their award as a team at the TD Garden following the Super 8 Finals between Malden Catholic and St. John’s Prep last night.

This trip to the Garden may not have been the way the Norwood girls envisioned but their head coach Bill O’Donnell admitted that the experience was a great one for the team and with all their accomplishments both on and off the ice, acknowledged that it was an experience they will always cherish.

“It was a fitting end to the season," he said. "They got this award because of the quality of the team not just wins and losses, but for good sportsmanship and work in the community.”

As the girls were able to go behind the ice and share the award with the Mulloy family who was in attendance, many of them relished the chance to get on the ice at the Garden.

“It would’ve been nice to play here," admitted star captain Ali Maloof. “Winning this award really shows how much a composed team we are and really shows who we are as a team.”

The girls celebrated with a dinner out on the town with their coaches and got to visit the locker rooms and the press room behind the scenes as well as take in some Super 8 hockey action.

“It was really fun to be here,” said Maloof.
