Local Performer Takes Stage at Perks

Amy Black and her band played Thursday night at Perks.

If Amy Black wishes to one day become a nationally touring artist, she said it's important to recognize where one has been before reaching new heights.

"It's all about having a good time and enjoying the music," she said. "I couldn't do this by myself, and I recognize that."

The self-described Americana artist and her band performed Thursday night at Perks Coffeehouse to a crowd of fans, friends and those looking to relax with some live music over a cup of coffee.

Rich Mosley and his wife, Amy, residents of Halifax, Mass., said as members of the music committee in their town, they received a demo of Black's newest material. After hearing her voice, they were convinced to drive to Norwood and hear her live.

"This is the first time I've heard heard her perform," Amy said, with her husband adding, "She's going to go big."

When the business has performances such as Black's, it's about making sure those who come through the door come back later for food, drinks and entertainment, said Raymond Brady, manager of Perks Coffeehouse.

The demand to perform live is huge, he said, as more than 300 acts currently are waiting to see whether or not they could perform to Perks' crowd.

"I turn down about seven out of 10 people wanting to perform here," Brady said. "I'm loving the performances."

Perks Coffeehouse is scheduled to host singer and songwriter Craig Sonnenfeld from 8:00-10:00 p.m. tonight.
