Mustangs Finish Record Season Tied With Walpole

Girls hockey ties Walpole, 1-1, to finish with a historic record.

The Norwood girls hockey team wrapped up their record winning season with a 1-1 tie over their league rival Walpole yesterday afternoon in Canton.

“Their goalie made some saves, our goalie made some saves, and it was a tough Bay State conference game with a tournament atmosphere,” coach Bill O’Donnell said, as his team moved to an impressive 14-1-1 record in the league.

Walpole scored first at the 10:10 mark, when Brook Masterson beat Norwood’s Christina Frasca on a eight-foot shot from the slot for the early Rebel lead.

The Mustangs went into the second period down 1-0 when Norwood found themselves down a man, but were able to kill the penalty thanks to some key saves by Frasca to keep the game close.

At the 6:06 mark the Mustangs found the net, after two shots on goal by Ali Maloof and Taylor Donners, Lisa Coskren picked up the loose puck and fired home the tying goal over the sprawled out goalie.

“The best record in Norwood’s girls hockey history,” said O’Donnell following the tie.

“It was the goal of the season to win the league and we did that,” added O’Donnell, "And with two non-league games left and the tournament we have some more work to do.”

This Sunday the Mustangs face a ranked Austin Prep team in Stoneham at 6:00 p.m. and face Dover-Sherborn on Monday in Dedham.
