Norwood Group Gets $1.25 Million Grant For Drug Abuse Fight

NORWOOD, MA — A local group has been awarded a 10-year grant to fight substance abuse and prevent youth use.
Impact Norwood will receive $1.25 million over the life of the grant, the group recently announced.
“Our goal is to make Norwood a safe and drug-free place for our youth,” Sigalle Reiss, Public Health Director and Impact Norwood Coalition Chair said in a release. “Prevention is a powerful tool to counteract drug use in our community, and we will use this funding to help youth in Norwood make healthy choices about substance use.”

The grant will allow Impact Norwood to pursue its mission and includes a re-application process after the fifth year to secure $625,000 for the second half of funding.
The National Drug Control Policy recently issued 719 Drug-Free Communities Support Program grants across the country, totaling $89 million, the most grantees in a single year since the program’s founding. The grants will provide local community coalitions funding to prevent youth.

Impact Norwood is a community coalition to prevent youth substance use. Its members include youth, parents, community leaders, business and faith-based organizations and town staff. The coalition engages multiple sectors of the community and employs a variety of environmental strategies to address local drug problems.
