Norwood HS Sprinklers Freeze, Break Off

NORWOOD, MA — Most of the Norwood school buildings survived the recent cold weather unscathed, but that cannot be said about the high school's main office.

Superintendent Dave Thomson told the school committee last week that a pair of sprinklers in the office froze and broke, flooding parts of the office with water. The first one took place on Jan. 7 in the break room. By the time school officials arrived, two inches of water was streaming out of the break room and into the main office, Thomson said.

While workers were replacing the sprinkler, another gave out in the nearby bathroom.

Thomson said the carpet may be saved but they need to check for mold growth. None of the computers were damaged.

The school's insurance does not kick in for the first $10,000 in damage. Thomson said if the copier needs to be replaced, that could get them near the figure.

"It was quickly responded to, quickly remediated, we're hoping the damage is minimal," Thomson said.
