Norwood League of Women Voters Ballot Question Forum: Community Preservation Act

Panel discussion on the pros and cons of adopting the Community Preservation Act, ballot question for Norwood on November 8

The Norwood League of Women Voters today announced its Fall Kickoff Event, “Learn the ABCs of the CPA.” This event will take place Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at 7 p.m. in the Norwood Police and Fire Station Community Room, located at 137 Nahatan Street. The event is free and open to the public.

“Learn the ABCs of the CPA” is a forum designed to help Norwood’s voting public gather information about the Community Preservation Act (CPA). Question 5, asking Norwood’s support to adopt this legislation, is on the ballot for November 8, 2016. The League has arranged a panel of speakers to provide information about the benefits of the law, the negative side of adopting this law, how the surcharge will be assessed to residents, and how the CPA has evolved in a neighboring community, which adopted the CPA three years ago. Each speaker will present information, and there will be a question and answer period following the presentations. The forum is scheduled to run two hours, and light refreshments will be provided.

The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan, political organization founded in 1920 – the year that women were granted the right to vote. The purposes of the League of Women Voters are twofold: (1) Voter Service: to promote informed, active citizen participation in government; and (2) Inform and Educate: to influence public policy through education and advocacy, and to take positions on substantive issues after careful study, which may or may not be of legislative concern.

The Norwood chapter of the League informs and educates the public on substantive issues in different ways. We sponsor several public forums each year on chosen topics of interest. The forums provide residents with information and opportunities to meet with various officials in accessible locations such as public buildings (schools, civic center, etc.) or homes, including our popular Candidates’ Night, which happens for every municipal and state election. Our goal for this event is to provide the public with a comprehensive overview of the Community Preservation Act that will help voters make an informed decision when they go to the polls on November 8. We look forward to seeing you on October 19 for this exciting and informative event.
