Norwood Man Charged with 4th OUI Following Altercation

NORWOOD, MA — An altercation near a Route 1 hotel led police to a Norwood man who was charged with driving while drunk for the fourth time, police said.
Robert Taylor, 63, was arrested on Oct. 2 and charged with operating under the influence of liquor (fourth offense). He was arraigned in Dedham District Court on Oct. 3 and is free on $1,000 cash bail, according to court records.
At about 5:16 p.m. Sunday, police received a report of an injured male near the Hampton Inn on Route 1, according to a police report. When officers arrived, the reporting party was at a nearby cut-through with a man with blood on his face. The man told police that he was walking his dog in the area when a vehicle drove by at a high rate of speed. After the man told the driver, identified as Taylor, to slow down, the vehicle stopped and an altercation ensued. The victim told police that both him and Taylor threw punches but he declined to press assault and battery charges.

The reporting party said she became aware of the incident when the dog showed up at the hotel alone. While on her way to the cut-through, she said she heard yelling, didn't see any physical violence, and was able to get a description of the suspect and his license plate.
Police located the vehicle and Taylor at his home on Nahatan Street. He denied to that he was in the area and said the cut on his nose and dry blood on his shirt was a result of hitting the door when police arrived. Police said Taylor had bloodshot and glassy eyes, along with a moderate oder of alcohol on his breath.

Taylor was taken into custody following a series of failed field sobriety test. He was previously convicted of operating while influence of liquor in 1994, 1991, and 1988. All three convictions were in Dedham District Court.
Taylor is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on Nov. 7.
