Norwood Selectmen Turn Down Request for New Beer and Wine License
The request came from a local gas station on Route 1.

NORWOOD, MA — A request to have the town petition for another beer and wine license license fell on deaf ears at last week’s selectmen meeting.
The board voted 4-0-1 to not add the request to the Town Meeting warrant. A new liquor license requires the town to approve the request a town meeting before petitioning the state to approve legislation to add the license.
“For us to put an article for the license on the warrant, we’re going to open the flood gates for anyone who might want a license,” Selectman William Plasko said. “This should be judicially done and not open the flood gates.”

The request came on behalf of George Saba, who owns the Gulf Station at 960 Boston-Providence Turnpike, Selectman Paul Bishop said he had an opportunity to get a license years earlier but was outbid.
“I don’t feel it’s necessary to go to the legislature and ask for another license,” Bishop said.
Chairman Allan Howard said in their letter, they should recommend possibly buying another establishment’s license.

Without the backing of the selectmen, Saba will have use a citizen’s petition to get on the warrant.
