Ground Broken for the new Higgins Middle School in Peabody

Another milestone reached this week on the way to a new middle school in Peabody

After years of planning, the official groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday to mark the official start of construction of the new Higgins Middle School. Local and state officials, teachers, students and members of the community gathered to watch the ceremonial shovels hit the dirt.

Construction of the $92.6 million middle school on the existing site is expected to take a couple of years. The Massachusetts School Building Authority awarded Peabody $43.6 million for the project.

Peabody Superintendent Joseph Mastrocolasaid was one of the speakers at the groundbreaking, and he said the new school will help create a better climate for learning.
