How Do Essex County Commute Times Compare?
New U.S. Census data reveals how much time we are wasting getting to work.

The good news: Driving to work for Essex County residents no longer takes 30 minutes. The bad news: It still takes 29.5 minutes.
That's according to the latest U.S. Census Survey, which says the long commute time estimated for those in Essex County dropped about 30 seconds from 2014 to 2015. It's still higher than it had been for 2013, 2012, or 2011.
The amount of workers age 16 or over took a big leap from 380,536 to 390,422. Of the 390,422, 74.1 percent are estimated to have driven to work alone, 8.6 percent are estimated to have carpooled, and 2.8 percent are estimated to have walked to work.

The percentage of workers estimated to have worked from home dropped from 7 percent in 2014 to 5.6 percent in 2015.
Statewide, it took the nearly 3,500,000 workers 29.7 minutes to get to work, an increase of almost two minutes compared to 2011.

Nationwide, the average travel time was 26.4 minutes in 2015, an increase of more than a minute compared to five years earlier.
