Obituary: F. Corinne (Cavanaugh) Burns, Long Career in Nursing

Participated in a Nurse's Health Study in 1976

F. Corinne (Cavanaugh) Burns, 90, beloved wife of the late John “Jack” Burns, died peacefully on Monday morning December 8, 2014 at the Partridge House Assisted Living Center in Hampton, NH after a brief illness.

Born in Gloucester, she was the daughter of the late William and Annie (Sawyer) Cavanaugh. She grew up and attended schools in Gloucester. She then graduated from Salem Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1946.

Mrs. Burns was a Registered Nurse employed for a long career at Salem Hospital, retiring in 1984. She played an important role in developing her health profession’s approach in how they provide caring for women by participating in a Nurse’s Health Study in 1976.

She lived in Peabody for many years where she raised her family, and in retirement lived in Exeter, NH since 1988. She was a member of the Salem Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. She was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Peabody.

She is survived by a daughter Nancy Leibe & her husband Russell of Rowley; two sons, William Burns & his wife Beverly Gallen of Portsmouth, NH and Ret. Colonel Michael Burns & his wife Kathy of Columbus, GA; four grandchildren, Ryan Burns & his wife Melissa and Lindsey DeLage all of Rochester, NH, Jennifer Marshall & her husband Josh of Newfields, NH and John Burns of Columbus, GA; five great-grandchildren, Braiden & Connor Burns, Kylan DeLage, and Collin & Mila Marshall; a sister Sheila Roper & her husband Sumner of Nashua; sisters-in-law Lois Cavanaugh and Madelene McComiskey of Gloucester, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, besides her husband and parents, by sister Nancy Rice and brother Bill Cavanaugh.

Following cremation, relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for her Funeral Service on Friday at 10:30 AM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 – 8 P.M. in the funeral home. Urn burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
