Obituary: Vasilios Malekakis, Born in Crete, Greece; Lived in Peabody for Almost 50 Years

Employed as a painter and worked throughout the North Shore

Vasilios Malekakis, 78, of Peabody, died Saturday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Athena (Nanis) Malekakis.

Born in Crete, Greece, he was the son of the late Constantinos and Angela Malekakis. He was raised in a small village of Alikabos where was a dedicated brother to his seven siblings before immigrating to the United States in 1967 and has lived in Peabody for the past 47 years.

While living in Greece, he was a member of the Greek Army and when he arrived in Peabody he was employed as a painter and worked throughout the North Shore before retiring. His children refer to their father as “the hardest working man they ever known.” He enjoyed nature and the outdoors, especially gardening in his yard smoking his pipe.

Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-law, Constantinos Malekakis of Fl, and Nicholas and Michele Malekakis of Peabody, his two daughters, Angela Teehan of Peabody and Effie Malekakis of Salem, and is also survived by his five beloved grandchildren, Johnny, William, Christian, and Nina Teehan and Nicholas Malekakis.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody and his funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Paleologos St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
