Peabody Downtown Cleanup Efforts Get A Big Boost

Additional street sweeping, trash and litter removal is coming to Main Street and adjacent areas downtown.

PEABODY, MA — Peabody is boosting its efforts to spruce up downtown as part of what Mayor Ted Bettencourt calls a response to feedback from downtown residents and business owners.

Bettencourt said on Monday that the city will increase street sweeping, trash and litter removal efforts on Main Street and adjacent areas.

"The revitalization of downtown Peabody continues with the addition of the North Shore Children's Museum on Main Street and the Bell Inn & Tavern at 2 Washington Street," Bettencourt said. "It is very important that our downtown cleaning efforts keep pace with the exciting growth and progress of the past several years."

Bettencourt said on Monday that, effective immediately, the Peabody Department of Public Services will sweep the streets two to three times per week, weather permitting, overnight on Main Street, Washington Street, Lowell Street and Foster Street.

Downtown trash and recycling containers will be emptied nightly seven days per week. Crews will also pick up trash and debris in all municipal parking lots and curbside on Main Street, Washington Street and Foster Street.

Crews will also be out during business hours two to three days per week on Main Street and Washington Street cleaning up municipal parking lots as part of their daily schedule.

Three large-scale downtown street sweeping operations will also take place each year on Main Street, Washington Street, Foster Street and Lowell Street. These will require a temporary on-street parking ban.
