Peabody Mayor Backs Plan TO Convert Restaurant To Housing
City Council will take up the issue again Thursday after rejecting it on Jan. 10.

PEABODY, MA -- Mayor Ted Bettencourt is backing a proposal to convert the first floor of the Peabody Coffee House to eight rooming house units. The restaurant at 59 Walnut Street is closed and there are already nine rooming house units on the second floor. City Council rejected the proposal in a 7-4 vote earlier this month.
According to the Daily Item, which first reported this story, Bettencourt said he supported the proposal in a text message to the newspaper. "I am hopeful the council will reconsider their earlier vote. These new units will provide housing for a number of our residents in need of assistance," he said.
