Peabody Pays $100,000 To Test Drinking Water

The city wants to prevent future problems like this spring's algae bloom, which left residents complaining of drinking water odors.

PEABODY, MA -- The city will pay $100,000 a year to test its water supplies and try to get ahead of problems like this spring's algae bloom in its water source that left residents complaining of a strong odor. Shrewsbury-based SOLitude Lake Management will conduct the testing according to the Salem News, which first reported this story.

"I've certainly learned through our experience earlier this year with the algae bloom that we can't be reactionary — that as a community we need to be more proactive regarding the treatment of our lakes and ponds," Mayor Edward Bettencourt told the newspaper. "I think this annual maintenance will allow us to be more proactive."
