Police Investigate Thefts of Storm Drain Grates Before Irene Hit
The following information was supplied by the Peabody Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following are excerpts from reports in the press log from Aug. 25-28.
Thursday, Aug. 25
- 6:59 p.m. A female caller reported her parents were lost in the cemetery at Cedar Grove. An officer found them on the municipal golf course next to the cemetery and brought them back to their vehicle.
- 7:20 p.m. Lindsay Lawton, 27, of 33 Juniper St. #9, Roxbury, was arrested at for shoplifting and on two warrants from Lawrence District Court. A 26-year-old Roxbury man was also issued a summons for shoplifting.
- 9:01 p.m. A caller on Aborn Street reported her bicycle was stolen.
Friday, Aug. 26
- 12:56 a.m. A 20-year-old Peabody male was issued a summons for intimidating a witness, following a walk-in report at the station that the male made some threats against a person.
- 1:48 a.m. A male caller reported he was assaulted near on Walnut Street. The victim refused any medical attention. The suspect's identity was unknown.
- 9:30 a.m. A caller reported a car was broken into the day before at . A bag was stolen.
- 1:24 p.m. A caller on Squanto Road reported his car was broken into. Several items, including a GPS device was taken. A wallet belonging to a person on Samoset Road was found near the car. Police contacted the owner and returned the wallet.
- 2:39 p.m. A caller on Northend Street reported some children were riding their bicycles and she felt it was unsafe so she called 911. Police reported the youths were gone when officers arrived.
- 2:51 p.m. A caller reported finding a dead cat on Pulaski Street near the . DPS was notified.
- 4:21 p.m. A caller reported a storm grate was missing on Samoset Road.
- 5:06 p.m. Police said multiple storm grate covers were stolen, both on Samoset Road and Perley Avenue. The caller on Samoset Road said he saw a black pickup truck in the area.
- 5:07 p.m. Police responded to a report of disturbance in front of -- a male and female were arguing with each other. Police said the couple were arguing after a break-up.
- 6:52 p.m. A caller reported a white GMC Envoy was being driven erratically near on Lowell Street. The vehicle swerved across the yellow line into oncoming traffic. Police were unable to locate the vehicle.
- 7:40 p.m. One person was transported to the hospital, complaining of back and neck pain, after a three-car accident at the intersection of Lynn Street and Rockdale Avenue. Two cars were towed from the scene.
Saturday, Aug. 27
- 1:24 a.m. Matthew J. DiCarlo, 30, and Donna L. DiCarlo, 57, both of 56 Paleologos St., Peabody, were arrested at their residence, following a 9-1-1 call from their home. The call was left open. Matthew DiCarlo was transported to Salem Hospital and charged with domestic assault and intimidation of a witness, while Donna DiCarlo was charged with resisting arrest and two counts of assault and battery on a police officer.
- 1:41 a.m. A caller on Crowninshield Street reported some people were having a screaming match out in the parking lot. The screamers left by the time police arrived.
- 2:20 a.m. An officer on patrol found a tree blocking the entire width of Lake Street near 7-Eleven and the intersection. The officer was able to move the tree to the side of the road.
- 4:02 a.m. Joseph W. Finnerty, 36, of Crombie Street, Salem, was arrested, following a report from a man who said Finnerty allegedly threatened him inside his apartment on Lowe Street. Finnerty left the apartment and headed to Dunkin' Donuts on Washington Street. He was charged with breaking and entering for a felony, three counts of assault and battery and on two warrants from Peabody and Clinton district courts for motor vehicle violations.
- 5:03 a.m. Police found a 27-year-old male slumped over the wheel of his gray BMW, which was parked on Railroad Avenue. The man's license expired last year and he was transported home by police.
- 8:59 a.m. A Garden Road resident reported she received a phone call from someone claiming to be her grandson and he needed some money -- $2,700, to be exact. She transferred the money and later discovered he wasn't her grandson.
- 12:12 p.m. Two males were issued summonses for assault and battery, following a report of a past assault at the Northshore Mall by mall security.
- 1:53 p.m. A female caller reported her son's athletic bag, containing a cell phone, iPod and headphones, was stolen from him on Friday at Pierpont Park.
- 2:04 p.m. A caller reported an unleashed pit bull was walking around in the vicinity of the Carroll School. The dog was brought back to the police station garage because the offices at Borash were closed for the day and a dispatcher attempted to reach the animal control officers. The dog was finally transported to Borash after contact was made with on-call staff.
- 2:54 p.m. A 49-year-old Peabody man was issued a summons for domestic assault and battery, following an incident at his residence on Goodale Street.
- 3:30 p.m. Flavio Pereira, 28, of 50 Fulton St., Peabody, was arrested, following a motor vehicle stop on Foster Street. He was charged with failure to display the owner's name of the pickup truck and unlicensed operation of a vehicle.
- 8:40 p.m. DPS reported another stolen storm drain cover, this time at the corner of Sycamore Circle and Butternut Avenue.
- 9:37 p.m. A caller at the Tannery Apartments reported she spoke to her son around 6:30 p.m. and he was intoxicated. He also told her didn't want to live anymore and would get a shotgun. The mother said she hadn't heard from him since and his cell phone was turned off. Police found the son passed out in his black Honda Civic and transported him to Salem Hospital.
- 11:26 p.m. David Chiste, 20, 30C Shore Dr., Peabody, was arrested, following a motor vehicle stop on Hingston Street. He was charged with failure to yield or stop, a marked lanes violation and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Sunday, Aug. 28
- 12 a.m. A driver was given a citation for texting while driving, following a three-car accident on Endicott Street.
- 12:36 a.m. A caller on Veterans Memorial Drive reported another female whom she had a harassment order against was outside her residence honking her horn and parked in the woman's spot. The 19-year-old female was issued a summons for violation of a harassment order.
- Police started receiving numerous calls after 7 a.m. and lasting throughout the day of downed trees, limbs and power lines, due to the tropical storm.
- 9:23 a.m. A fallen tree on North Central Court took down some wires with it. The Fire Department moved the cable line out of the road so vehicles could pass.
- 11:06 a.m. A tree was down in the middle of the roadway on Endicott Street. DPS was dispatched to the scene.
- 11:16 a.m. A fallen tree at the corner of Walnut and Howley streets was blocking one lane of traffic.
- 11:19 a.m. A caller on Northend Street reported the back door to her neighbor's house was left wide open all morning. Police said a number of items had been stolen from the home.
- 11:30 a.m. A caller reported the Bank of America ATM on Route 114 was damaged. Police said the front door was damaged.
- 11:35 a.m. A tree came down in the roadway at the corner of Winona and Lisburn streets, blocking the roadway.
- 12:33 p.m. Trees and wires were knocked down on Roosevelt Avenue, blocking access to the street until police and firefighters were able to remove them.
- 1:13 p.m. A tree came down, resting on a home on Kosciusko Street.
- 1:27 p.m. A tree was knocked down on Barr Road and took down some wires, while also leaning on the house.
- 1:54 p.m. Another tree down on Glenway Avenue. The homeowners were able to move the tree off the house, but it was then blocking the road until police and fire arrived to chop it up.
