Brooklyn’s Gentleman Brawlers to Bring ‘Electrifying’ Afrofunk Debut to The Spire

Acclaimed indie-dance collective promises a high-energy, community-focused performance at Plymouth's premier arts venue this April.

The Spire Center for Performing Arts is preparing for a sonic shake-up this spring as the Brooklyn-based collective Gentleman Brawlers makes its highly anticipated Plymouth debut.

On Friday, April 3, 2026, the historic Court Street venue will transform into a global dance floor. Led by the creative duo of Becca Fox and Matt Walsh, the band has earned a reputation for a "virtuoso" live show that blends the art-pop sensibilities of Talking Heads with the driving rhythms of West Africa, Trinidad, and Brazil.

A "Beautifully Engineered Machine"

The group arrives in Plymouth with significant momentum and international backing. Tom Robinson of the BBC famously described the ensemble as a "virtuoso live band, grooving together like a beautifully engineered machine."

That precision is matched only by their spontaneity. The band’s signature sound—a "sonic blend" of disco-style horn lines and "sticky" highlife guitar—is designed to bridge the gap between the stage and the seats.

“If you can MOVE you can DANCE!” lead singer Becca Fox is known to shout, often leaping from the stage to join the crowd mid-performance.

From Brooklyn to the South Shore

While the Gentleman Brawlers have shared stages with Grammy-winning artists like Cimafunk and Fantastic Negrito at iconic New York venues like the Brooklyn Bowl and The Public Theater, their stop at The Spire marks a fresh chapter for South Shore music fans.

The band operates in two worlds:

  • Live: A community-based, improvisational energy fueled by polyrhythms.
  • In Studio: A polished, EDM-leaning reimagining of their catalog.

Local fans can expect the "live" incarnation to take center stage, promising an exhilarating, celebratory atmosphere that has become the band's trademark.
