📰 News we're reading

1. Select Board backs proposed 392-unit West Plymouth apartment complex (plymouthindependent.org) — A 392-unit Darby Farms apartment complex in West Plymouth just won strong Select Board backing, with promises of major investments in water, sewer, firefighting, and recreation. Because all units would count toward Plymouth's affordable housing stock, the project could push the town over the state's 10% threshold, giving officials more power to block unpopular 40B developments for years.

2. News Experience the unique habitats of Massachusetts (mass.gov) — Plymouth residents can dive into the science and stewardship of Coastal Plain Ponds at a free MassWildlife presentation today, October 7, from 2–4 p.m. at the Plymouth Public Library on South Street. Habitat biologists will explain local pond ecology, threats to these fragile systems, and practical steps landowners and residents can take to help protect them, but advance registration is required.

3. Plymouth teenager gets probation in Harvard explosion (plymouthindependent.org) — A 19-year-old Plymouth resident has been sentenced to three years of probation and about $28,500 in restitution for setting off a large firework inside a Harvard Medical School building on Halloween. No one was hurt, but the blast caused significant damage, cost him his dream carpentry job, and led to strict supervision while he continues rebuilding his life with strong family support.

4. Women's Recovery Court Celebrated (vineyardgazette.com) — Women involved with the justice system from Plymouth and across the state are now served by specialized recovery court sessions, including one based at Plymouth District Court. A recent celebration on Martha's Vineyard highlighted how these courts blend treatment, strict supervision, and community support to help women rebuild their lives, with graduates sharing how the program led to long-term recovery and new careers.
