Relay for Life Asks for Hair Donations to Help Cancer Patients

Got hair? Then the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program needs you! People with lengthy locks are encouraged to donate it for cancer survivors at the Relay For Life of Greater Plymouth at Plymouth South High School on Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23.

Cosmetology students from Plymouth South will cut hair of donors beginning at 4 p.m. Friday, June 22, the first day of the overnight fundraiser to fight cancer. The students will provide much-needed hair styling for the tressless contributors following their donations.

Pantene Beautiful Lengths is a national program that makes wigs from donated hair for cancer survivors who have lost their hair as the result of medical treatments. To donate hair, volunteers must follow these requirements:

  • Donated hair must be a minimum of 8 inches long.
  • Wavy of curly hair is fine – you may straighten to measure.
  • Hair should be freshly washed and completely dry without any styling products.
  • Hair may be colored with vegetable dyes, rinses and semi-permanent dyes. It cannot be bleached, permanently colored or chemically treated.
  • Hair may not be more than 5 percent gray.

As part of are Pantene Beautiful Lengths, the donated hair is turned into wigs, which are then distributed for free through select American Cancer Society wig banks across the country. Women facing cancer can find out about the availability of Pantene Beautiful Lengths wigs by calling the American Cancer Society at 1-877-227-1596. ACS can also help callers with a number of resources providing educational and emotional support.

The Relay For Life of Greater Plymouth will be held Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23, at Plymouth South High School. Last year, more than 700 walkers and 125 cancer survivors participated in this important fundraiser to stop cancer. The event covers the towns of Plymouth, Carver, Kingston, Plympton and Pembroke.
