1. Philip E. MacDonald, 70 (thequincysun.com) — Quincy is mourning Philip "Phil" MacDonald, a longtime resident, civil engineer, and devoted family man who died unexpectedly on September 24 at age 70. Visiting hours will be held Friday, Oct. 9, at Keohane Funeral Home on Hancock Street, with a service there on Saturday, Oct. 10. His family asks neighbors to honor him through kindness or a donation to the American Heart Association.
2. Final Judgement Issued In Raise Petition Suit (thequincysun.com) — A recent court ruling finalized a lawsuit over how Quincy officials handled signatures on a petition to change the mayor's salary, confirming that many rejected signatures should have counted. Residents' group Quincy Citizens for Fair Raises says the decision vindicates local voters and hopes the city will stop spending on appeals while the council continues reworking pay for Quincy's elected officials.
3. East Boston Store Sells $4 Million Winning Lottery Ticket (patch.com) — A Quincy-based trust has claimed a $4 million grand prize from the Massachusetts State Lottery's "Strike It Rich" scratch ticket, taking a $2.6 million cash payout before taxes. The winning ticket was sold at a Mobil station in East Boston, and the store earns a $40,000 bonus. Quincy residents can still chase two remaining $4 million top prizes.
4. Quincy man indicted on federal gun, drug charges (boston25news.com) — A Quincy man has been indicted on federal gun and cocaine distribution charges after allegedly selling drugs to an undercover agent several times this summer and buying two pistols while barred from owning firearms. The 48-year-old, with prior convictions in Quincy and Taunton courts, remains in federal custody and faces potential decades in prison if convicted.
5. Men's Golf: Norwich finish T-5th at Keene State in Final GNAC Tune Up (norwichathletics.com) — A Norwich University men's golfer from Quincy, Jack Dunn, helped his team tie for fifth at the Keene State Invitational, shooting an 83 in their final tune-up before the GNAC Championships. While the event took place in New Hampshire, it highlights a local athlete competing at the college level. The team's strong showing sets them up for their home conference championship.
