📰 News we're reading

• As more colleges close, advocates are calling for them to be turned into housing (hechingerreport.org) — Quincy officials and neighbors are locked in a stalemate over the future of the shuttered Eastern Nazarene College campus, even as studies show the city is short about 4,400 homes. Proposals to add hundreds of housing units have collapsed amid political pushback and cost concerns, leaving the 27-acre site overgrown while other communities nationwide move faster to turn closed colleges into badly needed housing.

• High school football players of the week: Lining up 48 standouts from Week 4 (bostonglobe.com) — Quincy football shined in Week 4, with North Quincy junior quarterback Cole Doyle throwing for 291 yards and five touchdowns in a 36-26 win over Somerville, while Quincy High senior Ryan Sampson rushed for 197 yards and four long scores against previously unbeaten New Bedford. The roundup also spotlights dozens of other standout high school performances across Massachusetts.

• Press Release Massachusetts Delivers Specialized Training to Prepare Firefighters for Building Collapses and Major Emergencies (mass.gov) — Quincy firefighters were among those completing an intensive eight-day Structural Collapse Rescue Technician course at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy's Bridgewater campus. The training prepares local crews to safely rescue people from building collapses and other complex emergencies, strengthening the state's overall disaster response capabilities at no cost to participating departments.
