Five Things: Bullying, Allergies and Brilliant Computers

And cold weather. Consider warm socks.

Today is Thursday, Feb. 10. Here are five things you need to know:

It’s another cold one. The wind speed will dip today, but so will the temperature. While the thermometer reached 25 on Wednesday, according to Weather Underground, it will only creep up to 23 today, and winds of 6-8 miles per hour won’t help. In these conditions, it’s not just a warm jacket you have to think about, but also warm boots and thick socks.

Find out what Reading’s bullying plan is all about. The district will offer a free tonight to “help teach parents and other adults in our community about bullying prevention at all grade levels from kindergarten through high school.” If you have children in Reading’s schools, this could be well worth your time.

A technique that claims to eliminate allergies. The Natural Food Exchange will hold a tonight on “Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique.” I won’t claim to understand what this entails, but the listing the store posted on our events page claims that it’s “natural, painless and non-invasive.”

Looking for some advice? Social worker Marie Ammer will the Senior Center today for private consultations on questions ranging from financial assistance to emotional concerns.

The robotic takeover may not be far away. On this day in 1996, IBM computer Deep Blue defeated chess champion Gary Kasparov at The King’s Game. More recently, IBM computer Watson defeated two perennial champions at Jeopardy. I, for one, welcome our new digital overlords.
