Five Things: Valentine's Day, Storytime and... Rain?

With a little bit of science history.

Today is Monday, Feb. 14. Here are five things you need to know.

With the weather today, you may need… an umbrella? As strange as it seems with all the cold and snow we’ve had, Weather Underground predicts that today could bring rain. Temperatures should peak around 43 degrees, with lows not even reaching the freezing point. While I generally consider cold rain to be one of the most unpleasant weather patterns we can experience, I’ll welcome it after what we’ve had so far this winter.

It’s Valentine’s Day. If you haven’t made plans yet, Reading Patch brought you a selection of last week that could serve as a good setting for a romantic dinner. If you’re reading this early in the workday, you may want to call these establishments around 1 p.m. to make your reservation.

Make of this what you will. I like using this space to highlight a historical event that happened on the present day. Well, given the mood of the day, I’m going to pass on beheadings and massacres. Instead, I’ll tell you that, on this day in 1929, Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin by accident. It has since helped humanity fight all manor of infections.
