Boston Tea Party. On this day in 1773, a group of Massachusetts colonists made a stand against what they saw as another example of Britain's taxation tyranny, and dumped 342 chests of British tea into the water. Later known as the "Boston Tea Party," the midnight raid was a protest of the Tea Act of 1773, a bill enacted by the British parliament that lowered tea taxes paid by the British East India Company and granted it a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade.
