One Year Until We Celebrate Town's 375th

Select Board hears plans for two-week celebration of Reading's 375th birthday.

If by chance you still have your old t-shirt celebrating Reading's 350 birthday there's good news. You'll soon be able to get a new one for Reading's 375th.

Members of the Reading 375 Committee were at Town Hall Tuesday night to update the Select Board on plans for next year's celebration. The committee plans a two-week birthday party starting May 31 and running until June 15. During the two weeks there will be everything from music to fireworks, a 5k and a field day, and events at Parker Tavern, Reading schools, and the library. The committee is open to any ideas residents might have. They're also raising money and the next fundraiser is Trivia Night at RCTV on Friday, June 8. The committee received a waiver from the board to show a movie at Memorial Park on July 3. The Park closes at 10 p.m. which means without the waiver the movie would have to start with the sun out. The board granted the waiver to allow the movie to run past 10 p.m. and the show will go on.

The board also discussed the sale of the Gazebo Circle property and whether or not the town should consider using Reading's housing trust fund money in an effort to keep the home an affordable unit that would count toward the goal of Reading's 10 percent affordable housing. But it would take approximately $100,000 from the $270,000 in the fund and the cost was deemed too high for just one unit ... Bill Brown reported that 2,283 flags were placed at the four Reading cemeteries on Memorial Day.
