Police Log: Dog Excrement and Toilet Paper Flung at Homes

A look at notable events in the Reading Police log for Feb. 4-5.

Friday, Feb. 4

12:16 a.m. An officer came upon a father and son who had been locked out of their vehicle near the intersection of Haven Street and High Street. The officer waited with the pair until AAA arrived.

12:41 a.m. A Hopkins Street resident reported a motor vehicle running unattended in the Sam’s Bistro parking lot. An officer checked the restaurant and found that the vehicle had a flat tire. The owner had already called AAA, and was running the engine to stay warm.

5:24 a.m. Police notified the department of public works of icy road conditions on Tarpin Terrace.

7:25 a.m. Reading police notified state police of a Reading resident who had gotten stuck in a snow bank on the Rt. 95 onramp at the rotary. State police sent heavy vehicles to assist the stuck motorist.

7:58 a.m. Reading police responded to a two-vehicle collision involving a town vehicle near the intersection of Forest Street and Grove Street. Neither driver suffered an injury.

8:03 a.m. Police responded to a two-vehicle collision between two Reading drivers near the intersection of Heather Drive and South Street. The vehicles struck each other’s mirrors. An officer assisted the drivers with paperwork.

9:11 a.m. A Woburn Street resident reported finding large footprints all around her house. Police confirmed that the resident had large footprints all around her house. They also noted that the house next store had been toilet papered.

10:04 a.m. Reading police received an alert for a possible house collapse on Pitman Drive. The alert turned out to be a false alarm.

10:32 a.m. A Reading Commons resident reported that vehicles parked at his complex had been keyed.

12:51 p.m. An officer escorted the American Red Cross as it assessed the damage to a .

1:00 p.m. A Saugus resident reported that someone struck her vehicle than fled the scene when she was driving near the intersection of Summer Avenue and Woburn Street Thursday night.

1:06 p.m. Police responded to a report of three men who walked into the Bank of America on Walkers Brook Drive while carrying empty bags. Dispatchers spoke to the bank manager, who reported no problems. Two of the men reported that the third man was a delivery driver and not with them.

2:26 p.m. An officer retrieved a found wallet from the Mobil gas station at 1330 Main Street and brought it to the owner’s home. The owner was not home, and later picked up the wallet at the Reading Police Station.

3:26 p.m. Police responded to a single-vehicle accident near 361 Lowell Street and informed the Department of Public Works of a large pothole, which may have caused the accident, nearby.

4:04 p.m. Police responded to a report of an accident between a white box truck and a smaller vehicle. The box truck took off the mirror of the smaller vehicle. Police stopped the truck near the intersection of Main Street and Putnum Street and the drivers exchanged insurance information.

4:55 p.m. A passerby reported seeing a man on Pearl Street attempting to kick in the front door of a residence. The caller reported that the man moved out of sight to the rear of the residence. Police discovered that the man lived there, and was trying to unstick the front door, which had become frozen closed.

5:41 p.m. Police received a report of a vehicle blocking the road and circling the neighborhood near Federal Street. The caller also reported that the vehicles’ occupants were running into a house for ten minutes at a time. Police checked the area and found nothing matching the caller’s description.

5:55 p.m. Police responded to a report of a woman with a small child walking in traffic near the intersection of Lowell Street and Middlesex Avenue. An officer checked the area and found nothing.

6:35 p.m. Reading Police arrested John Diperri, 55, of Wakefield on series of outstanding warrants including  driving without a license, driving with defective equipment and driving a vehicle without an inspection sticker. Police released Diperri on $1,025 bail for court dates on Monday, Feb. 7, Tuesday, Feb. 8 and Wednesday, Feb. 9.

7:30 p.m. A Franklin Street resident reported losing his keys.

9:56 p.m. A John Carve Road resident reported that someone broke into her home. Police found that the burglar entered a home by breaking a window. The criminal then stole a laptop computer and a television.

11:26 p.m. The Reading Fire Department responded to a Franklin Street property to investigate a possible structural problem. The fire department found minor water damage to the ceiling due to snow.

Saturday, Feb. 5

7:35 a.m. A North Reading resident reported a loose Cockapoo, possibly near the Reading/Stoneham line.

10:25 a.m. Police called the owner of a wallet that had been turned in at the station and left a message on the owner’s answering machine.

12:41 p.m. Police received a report of water flowing down the street near the intersection of Blueberry Lane and Franklin Street. Police checked the area and found nothing.

12:48 p.m. Police responded to a two vehicle collision between a Honda and a Bobcat near the intersection of Pearl Street and Nugent Lane. The driver of the Honda reported that he had been backed into while trying to drive around the Bobcat.

12:59 p.m. A Main Street resident complained that a backhoe was dumping snow on the resident’s property. Police discovered it was the Massachusetts Highway Department doing the “necessary work” of clearing catch basins to prevent flooding.

4:10 p.m. A Reading resident reported that a Cadillac scraped the side of his vehicle near the intersection of Main Street and Salem Street. The accident left minor scratches to the driver’s side of the resident’s vehicle.

4:58 p.m. A Heather Drive resident reported that her Beagle had gotten lost near the town forest.

6:13 p.m. A Colonial Drive resident reported an ongoing problem with a neighbor who has been using a snow blower in the neighbor’s dog pen. The action, the caller reported, had resulted in rocks and dog waste striking the side of the caller’s house. The caller said he would check his house again in the daytime to verify if the incident had caused any damage.

6:25 p.m. An officer responded to a woman walking in the street and impeding traffic near the intersection of Main Street and Mill Street. She reported that she could not walk on the sidewalk because it was blocked. An officer gave her a ride to her apartment.

6:44 p.m. Following a traffic stop, police issued a citation for a junior operator’s violation to a Lewis Street youth charging him with having passengers in his vehicle.

8:49 p.m. A Buckingham Drive residence reported that someone broke into her home at some time between 5:30 and 8:15 p.m. and stole three televisions, a laptop computer, jewelry, several cell phones and some medication. Police said the burglar entered the home through a side door.

9:38 p.m. The fire department responded to a carbon monoxide alarm on Sanborn Street.

9:56 p.m. Police notified the Massachusetts Highway Department of water flooding into Main Street near the intersection with Sumner Cheney Place.

11:47 p.m. The Department of Public Works callman told dispatch that the DPW had run out of salt for the roads and was done for the night. The call man said town crews should have more salt in the morning and would return to work.
