Reading Named Among America's 10 Safest Cities for 2017

Neighborhood Scout recently ranked our community as one of the state and the nation's safest cities in 2017

READING, MA — After not being included in the 2016 list, Reading has been named No. 10 in Neighborhood Scout's ranking of the 100 Safest Cities in America for 2017.

According to Neighborhood Scout's data, there are 0.23 violent crimes per 1,000 residents in Reading per year, and 5.33 property crimes per 1,000 residents. Both figures are significantly lower than the violent and property crime rates nationally and statewide.

Neighborhood Scout further indicates that you have a 1 in 4,284 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime in town, and 1 in 188 chance of becoming a victim of property crime.

While it was listed in the top 10 nationally, Reading was listed as the third-safest community in Massachusetts, falling behind Franklin (No. 4 nationally) and Lexington (No. 8 nationally).

Neighborhood Scout's data ranks the 100 safest cities in America with 25,000 or more people. The rankings are based on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents.
