Congratulations to William "Mac" Doucette of Melrose.

Melrose’s William “Mac” Doucette, a sixth-grader at Austin Preparatory School in Reading, is the winner of the school’s annual geography bee.

The bee is part of the National Geographic School Bee series. Mac is passionate about geography and had a “contingent of friends cheering him on at the bee” according to Michael McLaughlin, Head of Middle School at Austin Prep.

McLaughlin also noted the emphasis on studying geography at Austin.

“We restructured our sixth-grade curriculum to focus on geography at the outset so as to provide greater context for students as they explore civilizations across time and space,” he said.

Next up for Mac: Taking an online test to qualify for the Massachusetts Bee on March 31. Only the top 100 scorers on that test will qualify.
