Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including: Okra in tomato sauce Greek string beans (fasolakia) Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes) Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes The market also carries a large variety of Lenten pantry staples and imported Greek products, including vegan Greek pies, Mediterranean vegetables, canned and dried beans, and an extensive olive bar featuring a wide selection of Greek olives. Several thousand residents and shoppers came out to Adams Park in Roslindale Village Saturday to be a part of opening day of the 28th season of the Roslindale Village Main Street Farmers Market. With Davey the Clown, lots of balloons, the band Opposite People and 30 vendors on hand, it was a great day to come into Roslindale Village, visit other shops and celebrate community. Carlos Arredondo and his wife were on hand for the official ribbon cutting ceremony. You may rememebr Carlos was the man in the cowboy hat who helped victims at the Boston Marathon bombings.
