Local Greek Market Celebrates Greek Lenten Traditions

Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including: Okra in tomato sauce Greek string beans (fasolakia) Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes) Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes The market also carries a large variety of Lenten pantry staples and imported Greek products, including vegan Greek pies, Mediterranean vegetables, canned and dried beans, and an extensive olive bar featuring a wide selection of Greek olives. All people are welcome to join the Roslindale Community Menorah Lighting event THIS FRIDAY, December 30, beginning at 4:30pm, at Adams Park in the center of Roslindale Square. This event was dreamed up by a local mom whose son wondered why there were so few public Hanukkah events to attend and participate in, so they created one. Gather together with neighbors and friends of all faiths to enjoy a special evening of Hanukkah Celebration. Rabbi Barbara Penzner of Temple Hillel B'Nai Torah will be leading the blessings over the menorah lighting. Please bring your own menorah and candles. There will be kids craft activities and hot coco for all.
