Local Greek Market Celebrates Greek Lenten Traditions

West Roxbury, MA — As the season of Lent begins for millions observing Orthodox Christian traditions, Greek International Food Market in West Roxbury is welcoming the community to explore the rich flavors and centuries-old traditions of Greek Lenten cuisine. Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including: Okra in tomato sauce Greek string beans (fasolakia) Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes) Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes The market also carries a large variety of Lenten pantry staples and imported Greek products, including vegan Greek pies, Mediterranean vegetables, canned and dried beans, and an extensive olive bar featuring a wide selection of Greek olives. Roslindale's Meggie Noel will be sworn in today by Governor Deval Patrick into the statewide Youth Council at the State House. Noel and Hyde Park's Jamila Sealy-Norvin will both be sworn in during a 1 p.m. ceremoney.   The Youth Council was established by Patrick in 2008, and it encourages young people to become civically engaged in their local communities. Youth Council members represent all of the Commonwealth's 14 counties. Members were selected by an application review committee for their excellence in leadership and their outstanding potential to create change in their communities and range from ages 14-20, according to a press release.
