SALEM, MA — As US 250th celebrations build toward the Fourth of July, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is backing a special rollout across the Bluebikes system in Greater Boston.
Bluebikes is transforming 250 bikes into moving tributes to the country's 250th anniversary, with the limited-edition bikes set to begin entering circulation June 22.
The custom bikes will feature designs created by student artists from MassArt and UMass Boston in collaboration with Blue Cross. The designs are inspired by themes of healthier people, healthier communities and a healthier environment. The bikes will appear throughout the Bluebikes system until mid-August.
The effort connects the region's bike-share network with the broader 250 observance, which is ramping up ahead of Independence Day.
By placing the themed bikes into regular circulation, the campaign is meant to bring Boston 250 into neighborhoods and daily commutes across the region.
Riders who spot a Boston 250 bike can share a photo with Blue Cross on social media for a chance to receive a $25 Bluebikes credit. Additional free ride opportunities will be linked to Boston 250 events planned throughout the summer.
The themed bikes are scheduled to remain in circulation until mid-August, giving riders multiple chances to see them during regular trips or summer events.
