Bestselling Author Martha Hall Kelly To Host Holocaust Discussion

The Nov. 12 virtual presentation is held by the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS) at Salem State University.

The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS) at Salem State University will host a virtual presentation with Martha Hall Kelly, author of the critically acclaimed novels Lilac Girls and Lost Roses on Thursday, November 12, 2020, 6 – 7:30 pm. Kelly will discuss the historical background of Lilac Girls, her bestselling debut novel which focuses on a group of Polish women that were sent to the notorious all-female concentration camp Ravensbrück for their resistance to the German occupation. At Ravensbrück, the women were not only forced to do backbreaking work but were also subject to cruel medical experiments on their bodies. Kelly will talk about the real-life characters portrayed in the book and why she chose them, and offer insights into her writing process. The event is free and open to the public and will include audience Q&A.

In addition to this talk, CHGS will offer a free companion educator workshop on November 18. The workshop will examine the Nazi’s medical experiments as part of its “Teaching Difficult Topics” series. The educator workshop will feature Dr. Patricia Heberer Rice, a historian at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and an expert on Nazi medical experiments, as well as a discussion about Kelly’s Lilac Girls. WHO: Martha Hall Kelly is a native New Englander and lives in Litchfield County, Connecticut. She has earned journalism degrees from Syracuse and Northwestern Universities, worked as an advertising copywriter for many years and raised three wonderful children. Her first novel Lilac Girls became an instant New York Times bestseller when it debuted in April of 2016 and spent 56 weeks on the paperback list. Following the success of Lilac Girls, Kelly published a prequel to the book, entitled Lost Roses (2019).
