Plummer Youth Promise

Plummer Youth Promise invites you to attend its 2nd Annual Community Picnic on Sunday, September 28, 2025, from 11:00am – 3:00pm at 37 Winter Island Road in Salem.
Listen to fantastic tunes from the Dad Bod and the Father Figures band and purchase delicious food from Chicken and the Pig or pack your own cooler with your favorites. It's going to be a day filled with free gelato, great music, exciting games, and engaging entertainment for all ages. 
Community members help make the lives of the youth that Plummer Youth Promise serve brighter every single day. The organization hosts this celebration on its Winter Island campus in appreciation of the support it receives.

Join us for a one-hour guided gallery tour in Spanish of Edmonia Lewis: Said In Stone. Get insight into the works on display and engage in conversation with guide Jenny Beauchamp-Ankney.

About the exhibition:
Born in Greenbush, New York in 1844, Lewis became the first sculptor of Black and Indigenous (Mississauga) descent to achieve international recognition. Beginning her career in Boston in 1863, she traveled to Rome in 1866 to join the leading American sculptors of her generation, breaking international, racial and gender barriers. Her vivid, naturalistic stone sculptures feature abolitionists and social reformers, engage with Indigenous identity, and give new life to religious and mythological figures.
Discover the first museum exhibition of its kind to gather the full range of Lewis’s art alongside works by her contemporaries and the generations of artists she influenced. Together these objects foreground Lewis’s life and work within her worlds and reveal her true mastery of marble.

Within the past generation, journalism has been upended by the Internet and social media — and it’s still undergoing extraordinary transformation. Join author Julia Cooke for a discussion about Starry and Restless: Three Women Who Changed Work, Writing, and the World, a triple-biography that illuminates an earlier moment of journalistic transformation.
Martha Gellhorn, Emily “Mickey” Hahn and Rebecca West were three trailblazing reporters who transformed journalism while reinventing the possibilities for women of their times. In Starry and Restless, Cooke takes readers on these writers’ adventures and challenges throughout the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s, from Omaha Beach on D-Day to Japanese-occupied Shanghai through Cuba, the Congo and the Nuremberg Trials.
In their lifetimes, these three writers were “the targets of near-continuous criticism, scrutiny, gossip, and, occasionally, praise.” Now, their legacies are illuminated by their own writing and letters in this extraordinary, globe-trotting triple portrait.
