Fired Salem Police Officer Files Appeal To Get Job Back

Ryan Davis was suspended and later fired after an internal investigation found he lied about an injury.

SALEM, MA -- A Salem Police officer who was fired for lying about being injured while on duty filed an appeal to get his job back. Ryan Davis was suspended for 18 months and fired in June. An internal investigation determined a cut on his foot had come from stepping on glass at home and not at the police station, as he had claimed, and noted that Davis had four other violations of department rules in the year before the investigation. The 17-year veteran was ultimately fired for failing to meet terms laid out in his suspension agreement, including keeping up with his police training.

"Any police officer in the state of Massachusetts is required to maintain their training yearly, otherwise they're put in a position to not work," Salem Police Chief Mary Butler the Salem News, which first reported this story. "There were specific things he needed to finish or complete prior to returning after 18 months."

The state's Civil Service Commission has scheduled a closed, pre-hearing of Davis's suspension for Tuesday morning.
