Here Get A Kitty, Kitty: Salem Shelter Filling Up With Rescue Cats

The Northeast Animal Shelter and MSPCA-Angell Cape Cod Adoption Center are holding a special cat adoption day after an influx of rescues.

SALEM, MA — If you ever thought of adopting a new little feline friend this could be your weekend in Salem and on Cape Cod.

The Northeast Animal Shelter of Salem and MSPCA-Angell Cape Cod Adoption Center in Centerville are holding special adoption events on Saturday as the shelters quickly fill up with cats rescued from Hurricane Ian-ravaged areas of Florida in recent weeks and an additional rescue in South Carolina this week.

The two shelters are looking to find forever homes for more than 50 cats to make room for more rescues in the coming weeks.

The rescues include adult cats and kittens as young as 10 weeks old.

The MSPCA and NEAS this week brought dozens of cats from South Carolina to Massachusetts through a grant from Subaru and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

This is in addition to the nearly 100 cats rescued from shelters in advance and in the aftermath of the historic Hurricane Ian.

"Shelters hit hard by the hurricane were already at capacity, and they've been inundated with more animals," MSPCA-Angell Director of Adoption Centers and Programs and NEAS Executive Director Mike Keiley said. "We need more adopters to step up and give those animals, as well as the ones that come to Massachusetts today, the loving homes they deserve."
