SALEM, MA — Salem Police Chief Mary Butler has ordered the euthanization of two pit bulls who mauled a woman and her dog on Ober Street in Salem on Aug. 2, causing "severe" injuries to her and her dog.
In a letter written to the dog's owner Sonya Aoude of Summit Street, Butler declared pit bulls "Prince Rocko" and "Luna" as being "dangerous" to the general public and ordered that they be humanely euthanized.

On Aug. 2, the two dogs charged at 60-year-old Julie Carr of Salem and her own dog on Ober Street, causing lacerations on the hand of Carr and resulting in the victim's dog suffering a broken hind leg and a serious laceration in its shoulder, according to Butler's letter.
Butler also indicate that after an incident surrounding "Prince" and a Corgi in Lynn in 2015, the dog was ordered to be muzzled and restrained on a tethering device no longer than a three foot lead at all times when out in the public and not in an enclosed area.

"Evidence of this failure to abide by this declaration and order is clear from the attack on Aug. 2, 2016 and represents an apparent disregard for the law and for the safety of the public," Butler wrote.
Aoude has 10 days to appeal the decision.
