Judge Wants More Jail Time For Driver Who Hit Salem Pedestrians
Dexter Mitchell, 54, of Gloucester, is trying to work out a plea deal to avoid jail time.

SALEM, MA -- A Salem District Court Judge signaled Monday she wants Dexter Mitchell, 54, of Gloucester, to serve more jail time, even if he pleads guilty to driving drunk and hitting an Attleboro mother and her two daughters when they visited Salem the day before Halloween in 2016. Mitchell's trial is scheduled to start May 31, but he will be in court again next week to consider accepting jail time as part of a plea agreement.
According to the Salem News, which first reported this story, Mitchell was allegedly drunk when he struck the family as they crossed Bridge Street on October 30, 2016. He hesitated a moment before driving away. He returned to the scene after dumping out beer in a dumpster behind a nearby apartment complex. One of the two girls was unable to walk and has undergone multiple surgeries since the crash.
