Mayor: No, Salem Will Not Fine Trick-Or-Treaters

A petition claiming Mayor Kim Driscoll planned to fine kids over the age of 12 who asked for candy tonight raised a ruckus in Salem.

SALEM, MA -- Let's state this clearly and concisely right off the bat: there is not legal age limit for trick-or-treating in Salem anywhere else that we are aware of. But proving that not even Halloween is safe from dirty politics, an anonymous person or group began circulating a petition this week saying that Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll would fine anyone over the age of 12 caught trick-or-treating on Wednesday night. The petition asked signers to support a move to impeach Driscoll.

The city has asked the Web host where the petition started circulating to take it down. Dricoll said Halloween is "for the young and the young at heart" and that she "fully supports" teens who want to trick-or-treat.

"That seems way better than spending the evening on Fortnite or Snapchat," Driscoll posted on her own Facebook page. "So, if a teen in a quickly thrown together costume shows up at my door, I’ll happily turn over some kit kat’s and peanut butter cups."

Driscoll's post did not specify whether hers was a full-size candy bar household.
