Salem climate change conference offers mix of hope and caution (wgbh.org) — Salem officials and experts gathered at the Peabody Essex Museum for an all-day climate change conference focused on how rising seas and flooding could affect this North Shore Gateway City. Speakers highlighted ways Salem's many historic buildings can be reused to reduce emissions and protect neighborhoods, while regional planners took home ideas to prepare their own communities.
   

2. Witch hats wanted: Salem hopes thousands will join for record-setting photo (boston25news.com) — Salem is inviting residents and visitors to pack Derby Wharf on Oct. 17 for a world-record attempt at the largest gathering of people in witch hats, part of the city's 400th anniversary. The 11 a.m. event at Salem Maritime National Historical Park will feature a drone photo and special-edition hats, with proceeds supporting local domestic violence nonprofit HAWC.
   

3. Five Massachusetts ghost tours named among the country's top 15 (wwlp.com) — Several Salem walking tours have just been ranked among the top 15 ghost tours in the United States, with one local "History of Hauntings" tour taking the number one spot. From witch trial history to vampires and voodoo, the strong reviews reinforce Salem's national draw for spooky, history-rich experiences, especially heading into the busy Halloween season.
   

4. John F. Welch Jr. Foundation (insidephilanthropy.com) — A foundation created by Salem native and former GE CEO Jack Welch is quietly directing millions in grants each year, including recent support for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem. While it doesn't accept unsolicited proposals, its giving in education, health, poverty relief, and animal welfare often favors organizations with existing relationships, making local connections and networks especially important for Salem-area nonprofits.
