Salem Heritage Days on Thursday, Aug. 7: Free Movie on the Common and Window Box Winners Announced

Heritage Days on Thursday includes a family-friendly movie on Salem Common at dusk and an announcement of the window box competition.

The seventh day of the Salem Heritage Days on Thursday, Aug. 7 includes awards for the winners of the window box competition and a free movie on Salem Common. Here’s the schedule for Thursday:

Shelter to Showpiece Tour; 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Come tour the historic houses at the Peabody Essex Museum and experience three centuries of extraordinary New England architecture, set in Federal-style gardens, that is found within one city block next to the museum. The tour free with museum admission to out-of-town patrons and admission and the tour are free to Salem residents. Space is limited and is based on first come, first serve. Everyone must check in at the admission desk before the tour.

“Huzzah for History!”; 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

The House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby St.

Come by the spectacular house made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and venture back into Salem’s maritime history! Families can pick up a Navigation Packet at the visitor center, which includes a ship’s log and compass, and begin their voyage of discovery navigating around the museum grounds! The Navigation Packet is available all day during Heritage Days and is included as part of the general admission price: $12.50 for adults, $11.50 for seniors age 65 and up and $7.50 for ages 5-12.

Family Activities; noon - 2 p.m.

The House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby St.

Each day, experience several unique activities at the House of the Seven Gables as you step back into early New England and learn about the timeless tales of Salem’s famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne, Lacemaking and Colonial Toys and Games. Call 978-744-0991 for more details. Programs are included in the cost of admission: $12.50 for adults, $11.50 for seniors age 65 and up and $7.50 for ages 5-12.

Farmers’ Market; 3-7 p.m.

Derby Square

Come visit us at Historic Derby Square on Front Street in Downtown Salem. The market is held every Thursday evening from 3-7 p.m. through October.

Window Box and Traffic Island Awards Ceremony; 5:30 p.m.

Brook House, 180 Derby St.

Join the Salem Garden Club and the Salem Beautification Committee as they award the winners of the city’s window box competition and traffic island sponsorship program.

The Salem Garden Club will also announce the winner of their 2014 scholarship award. Light refreshments will be served.

‘Grease’ Senior Dinner Dance; 4-7 p.m.

Salem Moose Center, 50 Grove St.

Salem’s seniors are invited to a night of dinner and dancing. Tickets are $8 per person. For tickets and more information contact the Council on Aging at 978-744-0924.
