SALEM, MA—Salem High School will be closed through Friday over coronavirus concerns after the school's principal traveled to Paris, France this past weekend, school officials said. School dismissal began at 10:30 a.m. Thursday for students.

According to Superintendent Kathleen Smith, Dr. Samantha Meier, the school's principal, is currently under self-quarantine for the next 14 days as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guidelines, and she is not exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19.

France is currently under a level three travel advisory, according to the CDC.

"Europe is experiencing widespread sustained transmission of respiratory illness caused by the novel (new) coronavirus (COVID-19)," the health organization's website states. "CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel."

Out of an abundance of caution, Smith said she dismissed Salem High School students Thursday morning. The school will remain closed through March 13. During that time, the school will undergo a second deep cleaning and disinfecting of the building.

"I am in contact with the Salem Board of Health who continues to work with us and advise us on next steps," Smith said in a message to staff and parents. No known COVID-19 illness is present in our schools at this time."

For students taking bus transportation, buses will be available for them to take home. If there are students that need a ride, school leadership will be available at the school to assist them and make sure they have a way to get home, Smith said.

Bagged lunches will be available for students from food services, she said.

"In addition, because of potential exposure and an abundance of caution we are closing all schools tomorrow to reassess the situation and clean the schools," Smith said. "Schools and public health officials will be monitoring the ongoing circumstances this weekend and will communicate whether further school closures are necessary for next week. You can expect a call later today (Thursday) from the superintendent about this announcement."
