Giving Tuesday is here and we’re sharing ways you can give back to local nonprofits in Salem, Massachusetts! Salem is home to numerous museums and historic sites, along with nonprofits in education, social justice, and more that rely on visitor contributions and purchases to support their missions. Here are a few ways you can participate in #GivingTuesday in Salem:

Essex Heritage

The Essex National Heritage Area encompasses events, programming, and historic facilities and landscapes around the region. Here in Salem, Essex Heritage manages the Boat Tours to Bakers Island Light in the summer along with the Salem Witch Hunt Film & Tours out of the Salem Regional Visitor Center. Many of the lectures and seasonal events that take place within the Visitor Center are programmed by Essex Heritage as well along with some of favorite October events like Imprisoned! 1692. Seeing the film at the Visitor Center and participating in their programming helps support Essex Heritage’s mission, and if you’re looking to give a little extra this Giving Tuesday you can also make a donation online here or learn more about their initiatives going into 2020 here.

The House of the Seven Gables

The House of the Seven Gables is putting a spin on Giving Tuesday this year by sharing a wishlist to support their settlement association. Gables’ founder Caroline Emmerton began offering educational opportunities for immigrants and their families in 1907 and this mission is continued today with ESL and citizenship class, community conversations, and more. If you’re looking to share some support this Giving Tuesday, you can view the wishlist and purchase supplies for settlement programming here. And on your next visit to Salem, your admission to tour The Gables along with any purchases made in their museum shop (which is perfect for holiday shopping!) also support the The House of the Seven Gables’ mission.

Harbor Sweets

A favorite destination for holiday shopping, Harbor Sweets also contributes to a variety of local community organizations (on Giving Tuesday and throughout the year). Harbor Sweets dedicates a minimum of 5% of their pre-tax profits to community outreach and location nonprofits including Plummer Youth Promise, HAWC, Lifebridge, the Northshore Community Development Coalition, and more. Do some shopping in-store this holiday season and support a local business and these valuable organizations, or if you can’t make it to Salem, shop online at harborsweets.com.

Voices Against Injustice

Voices Against Injustice brings social justice programming to Salem with the annual Salem Award for Social Justice, and they are also responsible for preserving the Salem Witch Trials Memorial on Charter Street. Supporting Voices Against Injustice this Giving Tuesday means remembering the victims of the Salem Witch Trials and taking the lessons learned from this tragic events to inspire social change in local communities and beyond. You can learn more about Voices Against Injustice here, or make a donation today here.
